In this blog, we show you the best ways to store dates. This can vary depending on the type of date.
What are the different ways to store dates?
You have several options when it comes to storing dates. The best choice depends on what you intend to do with them. You might want to eat the dates immediately after purchase, but it is also possible to store them for a longer period. Where can you store dates?
Storing dates in the pantry
Both fresh and dried dates can be stored in the pantry. This is a good option if you plan to eat them soon. However, keep in mind that fresh dates are best stored in the refrigerator. The lower temperature helps them stay fresh for longer. Also make sure your pantry is dry, dark and cool. The warmer the temperature, the less suitable it is for storing dates.
Storing dates in the refrigerator
Storing dates in the refrigerator is always a good option. The cool temperature helps the fruit stay fresh for longer. Dried dates can remain good for six to eight months in the refrigerator. Keep in mind that a layer of sugar may become visible over time. This is not caused by the naturally occurring sugars in dates, but because dried dates often have an additional layer of sugar added to them. Over time, this layer can become more noticeable. Some varieties of dates may also become slightly firmer after a few months. This does not mean that they are no longer edible. Fresh Yogi & Yousef dates have a shelf life of six months when kept refrigerated.
Storing dates in the freezer
You can store dates in the freezer, although this is not the best option for every type of date. Dried dates, for example, are better kept out of the freezer. Firstly, freezing is unnecessary because these varieties can stay good for months in the refrigerator. In addition, dried dates have often already been frozen. Freezing something again and then thawing it for a second time can significantly increase the risk of bacteria developing in the dates. These bacteria can potentially make you ill. For this reason, dried dates are better stored in the refrigerator than in the freezer. Fresh dates, however, can be stored in the freezer, where they will keep for approximately six months.
What is the best way to store different types of dates?
There are several popular varieties of dates that are eaten more frequently than others. Not every type of date should be stored in the same way. Below, we explain the best storage method for each type.
Storing fresh dates
Yogi & Yousef dates can be stored in the refrigerator for six months. It is important to keep them refrigerated at a temperature between 3 and 7 degrees Celsius. Fresh dates can also be stored in the pantry. Depending on the temperature, they will remain good for approximately four weeks under these conditions. Freezing fresh dates is another option. They can be stored in the freezer for approximately six months.
Storing extra soft dates
With extra soft dates, keeping them cool is even more important. This type of date has a higher water activity value. Water activity refers to the amount of available moisture in a food product. Because extra soft dates contain more moisture, their quality deteriorates more quickly when they are not kept cool. We therefore always recommend storing extra soft dates in the refrigerator.
Storing dried dates
Drying dates allows these stone fruits to be stored for longer. As long as dried dates are kept in a cool, dry and dark place, they can remain good for up to eight months. It is important to prevent dried dates from coming into contact with moisture. Dried dates contain very little moisture, so when they come into contact with it, they can absorb it. This may cause mold to develop. As mentioned above, it is also better not to store dried dates in the freezer.
Can you store stuffed dates?
How long stuffed dates can be stored depends on the type of filling. If you have made stuffed dates yourself, they can generally be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.
